A Luss(ty) Sunday ...

I have been on the Luss hills a few times before – Westies runs, evening rambles and shorter day walks but had always looked at the opportunity for a longer round. With bad weather forecast for the north / high tops, a nice 26km / 2400m ascent route seemed to fit the bill.

Route over the five Grahams / Marilyns as shown below.

which direction did you go and why are there bits saying 'danger'? I think I've done both bits on separate runs but I like the look of them together. nice work.

  2. Cheers Elizabeth,

I went anti clockwise. The underfoot conditions are great and the views impressive. The river crossing at the end to climb back onto the road could be avoided by dropping to the farm up the glen but I want to avoid tarmac so was happy enough to get rather wet but in spate conditions it would not be passable.

The "danger" is probably due to be directly above faslane and the associated "undergound" facilities built deep into the hillside. Reckon as long as you stay on the ridge there are no issues (well I didn't have any and consider I was running with the beard / rucksack combination likely to draw attention).

  3. How long were you out for Graham? I was thinking of a very similar route for a new long hill race, albeit taking in a few extra tops near the start and using the underpass under the A82.

  4. Evening Chris,

I was a lazy Sunday where I walked slowly up the hills and ran the levels / descents but at a trot rather than race pace so took almost exactly 6 hours. This included a significant amount of time messing about trying to find a river crossing point that was "safe".

Reckon with some adjustments getting on and off the hill, it would make a really good AL category event - for my money anti clockwise would be best since the run off the last summit is seriously nice :-)

Maybe see you down south with the masses at the weekend in London.

    Cheers
    Graham

  5. I hate to tell you but there's a footbridge over the river about 200m west of the A82. It's not marked on the 1:50000 but is on the 1:25000. I didn't know about it either when I did the round several years ago but discovered it after going for a wee walk from the spot where you probably parked the car just above the footbride over the A82. It's through that gate opposite to the start of the walk up Beinn Dubh near some old slate workings. Brilliant group of hills. Luke

The distance and height gain are more or less identical to the Arrochar Munros. Luke

    That made me smile :-)

Funnily enough, I always wondered where that wee path went to !!!
