One of many great things about the Corbetts is the number of them in the North West Highlands - an area I only visited briefly whilst doing my Munro round. Wee hangover from last year’s campervan trip was the duo of Cul Mhor and Cul Beag.
Drove north late on the Saturday and arrived in the dark.
Tired from the drive, it was good to stick the stove on for a late evening
coffee before climbing into the sleep bag for the night. Woke to a glorious
morning with blue skies above. Stove on again before setting out to the first
hill of the day and Cul Mhor. Great path led across the moor and towards the
summit. Took some time, to check out the route off Mhor which led to the lower
ground and towards the second hill of the day – it looked fairly straight forward
with the good weather but would have required very careful navigation in bad !
Views from summit were impressive with a relative wasteland
across the lower ground with lochs and lochans everywhere and the high peaks
breaking the horizon. Sitting on the summit, it was good to reflect back to
past trips in this area with my long suffering pal Joe.
Rather than risk an epic, stuck to the safe route dropping
down east initially before south then west to Lochan Dearg a’Chuil Mhoir where
it was good to simply sit and take in the view out towards Stach Pollaidh
(along with Suiliven …marked for another trip). Continuing towards Cul Beag,
was grateful that the outflow from Lochan Dearg was crossed easily and slowly
ascended the steep sloper leading up to the summit of Beag itself.
Again, it was good to sit on the summit a while and take in
the view, eat and drink what was left of the water before a run off the hill
and back to the van.
In contrast, Ullapool seemed busy – most likely due to the
ferry from Stornoway having just arrived. Grabbed some
food before heading round to Gruinaird Bay to ramble along the beach and watch
the sunset. One last evening coffee before the sleeping bag was shouting loud
again …after all an early rise was on the cards for a day raid into the
Fisherfield next morning !
